LCGB Overseas Study Tour 05/12
Genoa and Corsica – Sunday 13th May – Monday 21st May 2012
This tour was postponed from 2011. The proposal is simply to cover all the items of railway interest in and around the Italian Port City of Genoa, and utilising daytime ferries between Genoa and Bastia in Northern Corsica, to travel on all sections of the metre gauge ‘Chemins de fer de la Corse’ between Bastia, Ajaccio and Calvi.
The itinerary is as follows -
Sunday 13th May – BA outward flight, London Gatwick depart 10.30, Genoa arrive 13.25 (BA2688) (overnight Hotel Vittoria - Genoa)
Monday 14th May – Genoa depart 09.00 (Moby Line Ferry), Bastia Arrive 14.30. (overnight Bastia) (Suburban services operate between Bastia and Casamozza)
Tuesday 15th May - Bastia depart 08.55, with a stopover in either Ponte Leccia or Corte, to Ajaccio, arrive 14.06 (overnight Ajaccio) (Suburban services operate between Ajaccio and Mezzana)
Wednesday 16th May – free time in Ajaccio. Ajaccio depart 15.15, Ponte Leccia arrive 17.45 Ponte Leccia depart 17.52, Calvi arrive 19.43. (overnight Calvi)
Thursday 17th May – free time in Calvi. Calvi depart 15.45, Ponte Leccia arrive 17.36 Ponte Leccia depart 17.49, Bastia arrive 18.48 (overnight Bastia)
Friday 18th May – free time in Bastia. Bastia depart 14.00 (Moby Line), Genoa arrive 20.00 (overnight Genoa – Hotel Vittoria, 3 nights)
Saturday 19th/Sunday 20th May - Two free days in Genoa. There is the 24km long scenic metre gauge ‘Ferrovia Genova Casella’, a couple of funiculars, a rack railway, a Metro, and several ‘ascensori’ (public lifts) of varying vintage. ……..and even a plinthed FS class 625.
Monday 21st May – BA flight. Genoa depart 14.10, London Gatwick arrive 15.00 (BA2689)
This leisurely tour will afford plenty of time to have a good look around Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi, and to explore the city of Genoa, which, in addition to the above attractions, has some wonderful buildings, not least of all Genova Piazza Principe FS Station.
If ferries and cruise ships interest you there will be even more to keep you occupied.
Please note that the train timings for Corsica are provisional – the existing timetable has been extended from January 8th to April 1st (!) 2012 What happens thereafter remains to be seen, but in theory with the new AMG 800 panoramic railcars coming into service, schedules may speed up slightly.
For an eight night package ex. London, sharing in twin rooms with breakfast throughout, and including the ferry crossings, I would estimate a price in the region of £500/£550 per person.
Rail travel within Corsica can be sorted out on the day, so is not included. We will probably limit numbers to just 12 maximum, so to reserve a place please forward a deposit cheque of £200 asap, payable to LCGB, along with a completed Overseas Study Tour booking form, and a couple of 9 x 4 sae’s.
